Veterupristisaurus was the earliest known member of the Carcharodontosauridae; a family of large predatory theropods that included some of the biggest land carnivores on Earth, such as the well known Giganotosaurus, Acrocanthosaurus, and namesake Carcharodontosaurus. Veterupristisaurus lived during the Late Jurassic in the Tendaguru region of Tanzania; alongside animals like Kentrosaurus, Giraffatitan, Ceratosaurus, Dicraeosaurus, and Elaphrosaurus. The environment would have been a semi-arid floodplain surrounded by woodland, and was very similar to the Morrison region of North America. Veterupristisaurus most closely resembled Acrocanthosaurus, though it wasn't quite as large.
